My attempts to capture Brazilian football in paint continue, with this picture of the 1982 World Cup team, specifically Zico, Socrates (I finished the painting a couple of days before he died last year), Eder and Falcao. For some reason the players have shape-shifted into Jarmila Kratochvílová, early period James Taylor, the dark haired lass out of Abba and Billy Crystal. The painting took several months of staring at the blank wood and lots of time looking at old video clips of goals. After Socrates’ death I hung it on my study wall for a while and mourned for a lost era of youthful expressiveness.
I made a short film about the motivations behind this painting – ask me and I’ll put it on.
